The game is designed in an open world mode, where the user can compete against other players online. There are no quests or specific tasks in Minecraft; it is primarily a creative game. Explore endless worlds and construct everything from simple houses to massive castles. In survival mode, mine deep into the world, crafting weapons and armor to fend off dangerous mobs, or play in creative mode with unlimited resources. The game's goal is the same as it was in the Java and Legacy Console editions: players can create virtual realities in a sandbox-like environment. Survival elements such as brewing, hunger, and dimensions such as the Nether and the End are also present in Pocket Edition, as they are in other versions of the game. The multiplayer mode is cross-platform compatible, meaning it can be played on any device with a touch screen that can run Pocket Edition.
The HUD and other elements have been adapted to mobile gaming standards. Touchscreen interactions are used (both the iOS and Android versions of Pocket Edition have the same gameplay). Several features were changed to accommodate the disadvantages of touchscreen gameplay. The crafting system, for example, employs the MATTIS system, and items are discarded by long-tapping their icon on the toolbar. Blocks that are being targeted are highlighted rather than outlined for better visibility on mobile screens. Unlike the crafting menu on mobile, the crafting menu on Windows 10 edition is similar to the Java and Console crafting menus. The game was originally released with graphics similar to those of Java Edition Alpha (bright green grass blocks, old cobblestone texture, and so on), but as of version 0.8.0, graphics have been upgraded to match those of Java Edition Beta.
